GenSan Police Find P3.17M Smuggled Cigarette Materials During Firearms Search

The Philippine National Police seized suspected smuggled cigarette filter rods worth P3.17 million during the implementation of search warrants for illegal firearms in Barangay Apopong, General Santos City on July 3.

The PNP said the operation led to the discovery of 373 boxes and one pack of suspected smuggled cigarette filter rods. The respondent’s live-in partner was also arrested.

Operatives of the General Santos City Police Office, in coordination with other police units, implemented two search warrants for alleged violation of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Police said no firearms or ammunition were recovered, and the respondent was not at the property during the operation.

However, authorities found the suspected smuggled cigarette filter rods inside the premises, prompting the arrest of the respondent’s live-in partner after the contraband was recovered.

The Bureau of Customs later confirmed that the seized cigarette filter rods had been smuggled into the country.

Criminal complaints for violations of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, and the National Internal Revenue Code were filed against the suspects.

The PNP said the operation reflects its Focused Agenda under Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which emphasizes lawful, accountable, and results-driven enforcement.

It said the accomplishment also showed the police organization’s commitment to acting on all criminal offenses uncovered during legitimate operations, including activities that threaten economic security.

PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said lawful police operations may uncover other criminal activities that require immediate action.

“Hindi natatapos sa pag-implement ng warrant ang trabaho ng pulis. Kung may iba pang paglabag na matutuklasan sa legal na operasyon, pananagutin natin ang mga responsable,” Nartatez said.

“Our personnel are expected to act decisively on every crime uncovered during lawful police operations. We will continue to enforce the law without exception and ensure that those engaged in illicit activities are held accountable,” he added.

The PNP said it will continue intensifying its campaign against criminality, smuggling, and other unlawful activities that undermine national security and economic stability under the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The police organization said the effort is in line with its banner of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong mabilis, tapat, at nararamdaman.”
