Cayetano Asserts Senate Independence Amid Political Pressures

Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday stressed the need for the Senate to remain independent and grounded on truth as the chamber navigates mounting political tensions and high-profile national issues.

Speaking at the Senate building, Cayetano acknowledged the challenges of leading the institution amid a shifting political climate and ongoing public scrutiny.

“It is difficult to navigate as Senate President. I don’t expect you to agree with all of our decisions, but I’d like to tell you the truth,” he said.

Cayetano said his leadership approach has been shaped by experience, trust-building, and a commitment to protecting the institution beyond partisan politics or personal interests.

He emphasized that while the Senate remains open to working with the administration, cooperation should not come at the expense of the chamber’s independence.

“I started talking to people in the administration and simply say, ‘What we can offer you is collaboration, not capitulation. We will not capitulate,’” Cayetano said.

“Hindi pwedeng under the thumb ang Senate. The Senate cannot be dependent,” he added.

Despite political tensions and competing pressures, Cayetano said the Senate must continue fulfilling its constitutional mandate, especially during periods of uncertainty.

“We’re not here for or against anyone. We’re here to do our job,” he said.

Cayetano also described crises as opportunities for institutional renewal and public reflection.

“May crisis. Remember during crises, there’s also a great opportunity. Nandoon y’ung revival kasi naroon y’ung desperation ng tao,” he said.

As the Senate deals with impeachment proceedings and broader political controversies, Cayetano said truth and accountability must remain central to governance and reform efforts.

He also called for prayers for clarity and unity, saying the country’s institutions must remain guided by truth.

“Please pray that whatever plans the Lord has, there will be no spiritual or physical blockages. If the Holy Spirit is going to move around the Philippines, it’s going to change us, and it will start with the truth,” he said.
