BI to Strengthen Presence in Siargao

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is strengthening its local office on Siargao Island to monitor violations more closely, respond faster to resident complaints, and maintain a visible government presence to address growing community concerns related to immigration violations, public order, and responsible tourism.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado met with local government officials and law enforcement partners on Friday and acknowledged the concerns raised by local government units (LGUs) and residents regarding overstaying foreigners, disorderly conduct, illegal work, environmental violations, and other activities that negatively impact local communities.

“Filipinos are known around the world for their warmth, hospitality, and friendliness toward visitors. We take pride in welcoming people into our communities. But that hospitality should never be abused, taken advantage of, or mistaken for weakness,” Viado said.

The BI said immigration laws will be enforced fairly based entirely on a person’s actions and legal violations, without any discrimination regarding their nationality, race, or religion. It will also launch joint operations, direct reporting channels, and training programs with LGUs and law enforcement to help communities better detect and report immigration violations.

Viado said the initiative forms part of the bureau’s continuing efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement, border security, inter-agency coordination, and public service modernization.

“Our objective is simple: to protect our communities, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that the Philippines remains a safe, respected, and welcoming destination for responsible visitors,” Viado said.
