US Embassy Alert, Fil-Am Group Warning on Conflict Involvement Welcomed

The military has welcomed a recent security advisory issued by the US Embassy in Manila alongside a statement from the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) urging Filipino-Americans to avoid involvement in armed conflict in the Philippines.

The 2nd Infantry Division said both developments help reinforce ongoing efforts to discourage foreign nationals and members of overseas Filipino communities from engaging in local insurgencies, particularly those linked to the Communist Party of the Philippines–New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

The US Embassy advisory warned of intensified military operations against communist rebels in several areas, including Mindoro, Negros, Leyte, and Samar. It also highlighted recent incidents involving foreign nationals, including an April 19 encounter in Negros Occidental where two Americans were killed. The embassy cautioned that association with armed groups exposes individuals to serious risks such as arrest, injury, or death.

NaFFAA echoed these concerns, stressing that participation in armed struggle is not a legitimate path to reform. The group instead urged Filipino-Americans to pursue advocacy through peaceful and lawful means, citing the dangers posed by misinformation and recruitment efforts targeting overseas communities.

Military officials noted that past cases involving Filipino-Americans joining insurgent groups point to a continuing challenge. Incidents in Mindoro, including those involving individuals reportedly recruited into rebel ranks, have raised alarm over the reach of such efforts beyond the Philippines.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines said it is intensifying public awareness campaigns and coordination with stakeholders to counter recruitment and protect vulnerable individuals. Community engagement programs, particularly in conflict-affected areas, remain central to these efforts.

Division commander Major General Ramon Zagala said the embassy advisory and NaFFAA’s position serve as important reminders of the risks tied to armed involvement.

He emphasized that preventing recruitment and promoting informed decision-making are key to avoiding further loss of life, adding that long-term peace depends on keeping communities safe and steering individuals away from violence.

The military reiterated its broader objective of ensuring stability in affected regions, particularly in Mindoro, where operations and development initiatives are being pursued in tandem to address the roots of conflict and promote lasting security.
