‘Beyond the Dark: Nightwatch’ brings two-player horror to Switch 2 on October 22

Surviving a haunted house is difficult enough when you can see what’s coming. In Beyond the Dark: Nightwatch, one player must face the danger firsthand while another tries to keep them alive from behind a surveillance system.

That unusual division of responsibilities drives the upcoming two-player horror game from French developer Atlantis Studio, scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22.

Instead of giving both players the same experience, the game separates them into two distinct roles with different information, responsibilities, and ways of interacting with their surroundings.

The Explorer ventures inside an isolated, mysterious house, investigating rooms, gathering clues, and searching for a way out while avoiding a threatening presence known as Gloam.

Meanwhile, the Overseer monitors the Explorer’s movements through security cameras, examines documents, and uses tactical tools to provide guidance from a separate location.

The challenge lies in what neither player knows. The Explorer may encounter something the Overseer cannot immediately see, while the Overseer may uncover information that could determine whether their partner survives.

This arrangement turns communication into a central gameplay mechanic, requiring players to describe their surroundings, interpret clues, and make decisions together under pressure.

The experience also features Troy Baker; the prominent voice actor associated with major video game franchises including The Last of Us and Death Stranding.

Beyond its horror setting, the game is designed to accommodate several ways of playing together, including couch co-op, local network connections, and online multiplayer.

Nintendo’s GameShare feature allows compatible Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles to participate in local cooperative sessions without requiring both players to own separate copies.

A separate Friend’s Pass also supports online cooperative play with a partner who owns the full game, subject to applicable online requirements.

The upcoming release represents the first game from Atlantis Studio, which has built its horror experience around asymmetric gameplay rather than conventional cooperative exploration.

Japan-based Q-Games, meanwhile, announced on October 16 that it would oversee publishing across Asia and unveiled a new trailer ahead of the release.

The game’s Asian Nintendo Store page is expected to become available on October 22, coinciding with its scheduled launch.

Arriving just over a week before Halloween, Beyond the Dark: Nightwatch puts an unusual twist on survival horror by making the most important tool for escaping a haunted house not a weapon, but another person who sees the danger differently.
