Beyoncé Goes Back to ‘B’DAY’ 20 Years Later — With Selena, Maluma and Songs From the Vault

  • September 4, 2026

Twenty years ago, Beyoncé gave herself two weeks and made B’DAY.

Released on Sept. 4, 2006 — her 25th birthday — the singer’s second solo album arrived with “Déjà Vu,” “Irreplaceable,” “Ring the Alarm,” “Upgrade U,” “Get Me Bodied” and “Freakum Dress,” songs that pushed her deeper into the roles of songwriter, producer and visual artist.

Now, on her birthday two decades later, Beyoncé is returning to that record with B’DAY (20th Anniversary Edition), a remastered and significantly expanded version that brings unreleased material, B-sides, Spanish-language recordings and newly restored music videos into the album’s orbit.

For Beyoncé, the original sessions were about making something immediate.

“I wanted the album to be big, percussive, hard, up-tempo, and energized, and it was important to me that we used live instrumentation,” she recalls.

At the time, hip-hop’s influence was increasingly dominant, but Beyoncé wanted the record to retain the musical elements she associated with R&B.

“Hip-hop was taking over at the time, but I was fighting to preserve the bridges, melodies, and harmonies that have always been at the heart of R&B,” she says. “The goal was to blend those two worlds through the art of sampling.”

That could mean stripping a song down as much as building one up.

“I loved the minimalism of a beautiful vocal arrangement over a simple drum loop or a classic guitar like ‘Irreplaceable’…but only if that 808 was banging underneath.”

The anniversary edition also returns to the visual side of B’DAY. Videos originally captured on 35mm have been remastered, recolored and finished in 4K, including the Sophie Muller-directed “Déjà Vu” featuring JAY-Z.

Previously unseen photographs taken in New Orleans are also included. Beyoncé’s family has deep roots in the city, which at the time of the original album was rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

But this is not simply the 2006 album with cleaner audio and upgraded pictures.

The expanded project reaches into Beyoncé’s archives while adding new collaborations.

“MORNING DEW (DONK),” a song that had leaked in 2023, officially arrived when the anniversary project was announced on July 4. A JAY-Z remix followed on Aug. 4.

Then there is “Cuerpo Tumbao (Get Me Bodied),” featuring Colombian singer Maluma.

The track samples Afro-Cuban icon Celia Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao” and was produced by Beyoncé, Edgar Barrera and CASTA, with Ali “Ali Ali” Alvarez as co-producer.

Another addition carries an entirely different kind of history.

“Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” features Selena, the late Mexican American singer known as the “Queen of Tejano Music.” The collaboration was made possible with approval from Selena Quintanilla’s estate, which rarely grants use of her music.

The connection predates this release. Beyoncé has spoken about hearing Selena on the radio while growing up in Houston and credits her as an inspiration behind Irreemplazable, the Spanish-language EP she released in 2007.

Both “Cuerpo Tumbao” and “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” appear as digital-only additions to the 31-track Digital Deluxe edition.

The anniversary release also opens the vault further.

Among its additions is “Can I Watch You,” produced by Beyoncé and Pharrell, along with “My First Time,” a song originally recorded for her 2003 debut solo album Dangerously in Love but ultimately left off its final tracklist.

B-sides “Lost Yo Mind,” “Creole” and “Back Up” also make the expanded edition.

Collectors get an even bigger physical package. The Deluxe Vinyl comes as four 180-gram Bayou Blue LPs with a 60-page commemorative booklet and two double-sided art prints. A limited Standard Vinyl edition arrives as a two-LP set with new sequencing, additional tracks and remixes, “MORNING DEW (DONK),” and a 16-page booklet featuring previously unseen imagery.

There are also CD editions and the 31-track Digital Deluxe release.

What began in 2006 as a two-week recording sprint has returned two decades later as a much larger document of the period — the original album, its visual world, songs that once sat outside the tracklist and new recordings connecting Beyoncé’s past work with artists and influences that mattered to her.

And the date remains exactly where it started. Sept. 4. Beyoncé’s birthday. B’DAY, all over again.
