Authorities Remind Public on Risks of Online Threats After Leyte School Incident

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has reiterated the seriousness of online threats following the case of a 14-year-old student in Leyte who was taken into custody after allegedly posting a school attack threat on social media.

He said the incident highlights how digital posts, even those later assessed as non-actionable, are treated as serious security concerns due to their potential to trigger panic and disrupt school communities.

Law enforcement units acted immediately after receiving information on the post, underscoring the importance of rapid coordination in potential threat situations involving minors.

The student was later turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for assessment and intervention, as officials stressed the need for responsible social media use, particularly among young users.

They also noted that statements perceived as jokes may still prompt emergency responses if they suggest possible violence or harm in schools.

Officials urged schools, parents, and communities to remain vigilant and reinforce proper digital behavior to prevent similar incidents.
