CIDG Busts P900K Worth of Cigarettes Without Health Warnings in Cebu

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) seized around P900,000 worth of cigarettes allegedly being sold without the required graphic health warnings during a law enforcement operation in Mandaue City, Cebu.

The operation was conducted at around 8 pm on May 21 in Barangay Tipolo by the CIDG Regional Field Unit 7 Special Operation Team, together with the CIDG Mandaue City Field Unit and local police units.

Authorities arrested two men identified only as “Isko” and “Virgil,” both of legal age, after they were allegedly caught selling, distributing, and possessing cigarettes that did not carry the required graphic health warnings.

The operation led to the confiscation of 40 master cases of alleged substandard cigarettes valued at P900,000.

The CIDG said the suspects violated Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law, which requires tobacco products to carry pictorial and text warnings on the dangers of smoking.

CIDG Director Police Major General Robert AA Morico II said the law is meant to protect public health, promote health awareness, and guard consumers against trade malpractice and substandard tobacco products.

Authorities said the seizure should serve as a warning to traders and distributors to comply with tobacco regulations and packaging requirements.

The CIDG also urged the public not to buy cigarettes that do not bear proper graphic health warnings and to report suspected smuggled or illicit tobacco products, as well as suspicious manufacturing or distribution activities in their communities.

The arrested suspects will face charges for violating the Graphic Health Warnings Law.
