AFP: Public Trust Fortifies West Philippine Sea Defense Mission

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said strong public support for the government’s defense of the West Philippine Sea has reinforced its commitment to protect the country’s territory, maritime rights, and Filipino fishermen.

AFP spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad made the statement after the latest OCTA Research survey showed that 76 percent of Filipinos support the government’s commitment to defend national territory, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.

Only seven percent disagreed with the government’s position, according to the survey results cited by the AFP.

He said the findings reflect the public’s clear recognition that defending the country’s sovereignty, sovereign rights, and maritime entitlements is not only a military responsibility, but a shared national duty.

“This overwhelming manifestation of support strengthens our resolve to keep performing our mandate,” he emphasized.

He said the AFP remains guided by its constitutional duty and the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept in securing the country’s exclusive economic zone and protecting Filipino fishermen operating in Philippine waters.

The military also said the survey results add to its determination to resist coercive and illegal actions in the country’s maritime zones.

He assured the public that AFP operations in the West Philippine Sea would continue to be carried out with professionalism, transparency, and adherence to international law.

“This strong public trust fortifies our determination to resist coercive and illegal actions in our waters,” he said.

The AFP said the defense of the West Philippine Sea would remain anchored on national unity, public trust, and the country’s commitment to uphold its rights under international law.
