The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested social media personality Franco Mabanta over an alleged attempt to extort P350 million from former House Speaker and Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, prompting Malacañang to stress that due process will be observed as the case moves forward.
Mabanta was apprehended following claims that he sought payment in exchange for withholding the release of a video that supposedly links Romualdez to issues involving flood control projects.
In a press briefing in Cebu, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the administration is firm on holding individuals accountable for alleged wrongdoing, while ensuring that legal procedures are strictly followed.
She emphasized that the position of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is to uphold accountability under the law regardless of a person’s identity or affiliations.
Castro also dismissed speculation linking the President to Mabanta, saying the latter has no personal relationship with Marcos. She further pointed out that questions about Mabanta’s associations should instead be directed elsewhere, noting his past appearances with figures from other political camps.
Authorities have yet to release full details of the charges to be filed, but the case is expected to proceed under existing laws on extortion and related offenses.
Malacañang reiterated that while the government supports efforts to investigate alleged criminal acts, it remains committed to ensuring fairness and due process throughout the legal proceedings.
