Palace Vows Action Against Fake News Peddlers, Says No One Will Be Spared

Malacañang reaffirmed its stance against the spread of misinformation, saying authorities will pursue those responsible as part of efforts to protect public trust and economic stability.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the government will not turn a blind eye to individuals who deliberately circulate false information, stressing that such acts harm not only institutions but also the broader economy.

Her remarks came after the release on bail of former broadcaster Jay Sonza, who was arrested over alleged online posts claiming false information about the health of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..

“Sa mga gumagawa ng krimen, hindi kayo sasantuhin ng batas. Huhusgahan kayo ng katotohanan. Huwag pagkakitaan ang fake news—katotohanan lang ang inyong ibigay at hindi kayo nakakatulong sa ekonomiya,” Castro said.

She clarified, however, that the Palace is not issuing threats but reiterating that investigating misinformation falls under the mandate of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

“Hindi po tayo nagbibigay ng anumang warning sa mga fake news peddlers. Ang sinasabi lamang po natin dito, kapag nakita na may kumakalat na fake news, mandato po ng NBI na ito ay imbestigahan,” she added.

Asked whether the same position applies to statements made by Senator Imee Marcos regarding the President’s health, Castro said it is up to authorities to determine the validity of such claims.

She also cited remarks from Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr., who earlier disputed claims that the country continues to import certain vegetables despite sufficient local production, describing such assertions as inaccurate.

Castro said individuals making public statements should be ready to substantiate their claims, noting that spreading unverified information can mislead the public and create unnecessary concern.

The Palace reiterated that while freedom of expression is respected, accountability remains essential, particularly when false information has the potential to affect public confidence and national interests.
