A Senate resolution has been filed commending Filipino-American basketball player Jordan Taylor Clarkson for his historic victory in the 2026 National Basketball Association (NBA) Championship Finals, where he became the first-ever NBA champion of Filipino descent.
Filed on Wednesday, June 17, Proposed Senate Resolution No. 463 seeks to formally recognize the New York Knicks shooting guard’s “extraordinary achievement” and honor his “instrumental contribution” to the team’s championship victory.

“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, as it hereby resolved, that the Senate of the Philippines congratulate and commend Jordan Taylor Clarkson for his historic win in the 2026 NBA Championship Finals, making him the first Filipino NBA Champion, cementing Filipino achievements in the hallowed history of the NBA, and paving the way for future generations of Filipino athletes,” the resolution read.
Clarkson, who has represented the Philippines for the national team Gilas Pilipinas at the 2018 Asian Games and the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, is described in the resolution as “one of the most successful Filipino basketball players in history.”
Sen. Francisco Pangilinan, author of the resolution, highlighted Clarkson’s role as a combo guard and primary ball-handler for the New York Knicks, citing his contribution as a key source of offensive production and veteran leadership throughout the hard-fought five-game series against the San Antonio Spurs.
The Knicks wrapped up their post-season campaign with a closely contested 94-90 victory over the Spurs in the championship-clinching Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals on June 13, 2026, ending a 53-year championship drought for the franchise.
The resolution also emphasized Clarkson’s strong pride in his Filipino heritage.
Born to an African-American father, Mike Clarkson, and a Filipino-American mother, Annette Tullao Davis, Clarkson credits his Filipino maternal grandmother, Marcelina Tullao Kingsolver of Bacolor, Pampanga, for immersing him in Filipino culture. His father has also shared that Clarkson’s deep connection to his Filipino roots has been a key motivation behind his career and success.
Beyond his NBA achievement, the resolution also recognized Clarkson’s advocacy for Filipino youth empowerment, noting his support for grassroots basketball development through “rendering exemplary service and pledging significant resources toward the development and upliftment of grassroots basketball across the country.”
Through the measure, the Senate reaffirmed its support for initiatives that promote youth development, strengthen grassroots sports programs, and recognize Filipino talent on the global stage, with the aim of inspiring future generations of Filipino athletes.
