Villar Commends DOTr for Expanded Transport Relief Programs for Commuters

Senator Mark Villar has expressed support for the transport assistance programs implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), citing their impact in easing the financial burden on commuters amid rising fuel and energy costs.

During the fourth public hearing of the Senate PROTECT Committee on April 29, 2026, Villar highlighted fare discount initiatives and free ride programs as crucial relief measures for daily passengers affected by global economic pressures.

“We know the crisis has a big effect on our passengers in the transportation sector. These programs are very important for our commuters,” Villar said, as he sought updates on ongoing government interventions.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez reported that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is currently implementing a 50-percent fare discount for MRT-3 and LRT-2 passengers, alongside free parking at LRT-2 Santolan Avenue. Similar discounts are also being applied in LRT-1 operations.

Lopez added that free rides under the EDSA Bus Carousel continue to be provided as part of efforts to reduce commuting costs.

“Across all transport sectors, we are implementing programs to reduce costs and support commuters,” Lopez said.

He also cited additional measures, including reduced airport terminal fees, lower roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) charges—from P546 to as low as P1—and continuing support programs for seafarers under the Maritime Industry Authority.

Villar commended the DOTr for the rollout of these initiatives, saying they provide meaningful relief to commuters who continue to feel the effects of higher transportation and fuel costs.
