The Philippine National Police (PNP) is stepping up its nationwide campaign against illegal gambling by strengthening community-based intelligence gathering to identify and dismantle illegal gambling operations.
The intensified drive supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive, implemented through Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to strengthen enforcement efforts and dismantle illegal gambling networks across the country.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said information from residents remains one of the police force’s most effective tools in locating illegal gambling activities in communities.
“Illegal gambling breeds other crimes, from domestic violence to theft, robbery and even crimes against persons. And this is the reason why your PNP has been very aggressive in its campaign as manifested by our monthly accomplishment reports,” Nartatez said.
PNP data shows intensified operations in July led to the arrest of 9,401 individuals and the confiscation of more than ₱3.2 million worth of bet money and gambling paraphernalia.
Nartatez said the campaign is being carried out nationwide, with police operations extending beyond Metro Manila to municipalities, provinces and remote communities where illegal gambling remains prevalent.
“Our operations are not only focused in Metro Manila. The same level of aggressive operations has been ongoing in municipalities and provinces, including far-flung areas,” he said.
The PNP chief said illegal gambling is not only a law enforcement concern but also a driver of other criminal activities, based on police data. He added that dismantling illegal gambling operations is expected to help improve peace and order in affected communities.
