The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and a senior official of the United States House of Representatives’ Select Committee on China discussed ways to deepen maritime security cooperation during a meeting at the PCG National Headquarters in Manila on August 3.
The Coast Guard welcomed Maseh Zarif, staff director of the US congressional committee, for talks that reaffirmed the longstanding alliance between the Philippines and the United States.
Discussions centered on maritime security, search and rescue interoperability, capacity building and promoting a free, open and rules-based maritime domain.
PCG Commandant Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan highlighted the progress of bilateral cooperation through mechanisms such as the Mutual Defense Board-Security Engagement Board and the Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Agreement, which enhance joint protocols, real-time information sharing and maritime law enforcement coordination.
The two sides also discussed the PCG’s participation in multinational exercises, including the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026, as well as efforts to strengthen maritime domain awareness through improved communications, fleet modernization and workforce development.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to transparency and rules-based maritime governance.
Gavan said the PCG’s greatest strength lies in its professionalism, adherence to international law and commitment to truth. The Coast Guard added that the engagement reinforces regional cooperation and collective efforts toward a safe, secure and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
