DOE Monitors Visayas Grid as Yellow, Red Alerts Persist

The Department of Energy is closely monitoring the Visayas Power Grid as it remains under Yellow and Red Alerts due to a persistent squeeze on the region’s electricity supply, officials announced.

During a press briefing, Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan clarified that while the Visayas Grid struggles, power conditions in Luzon and Mindanao remain stable and fully within normal operating capacities.

Marasigan attributed the tight supply in the Visayas to a combination of forced outages and planned preventive maintenance across several power generation plants in the region, creating a critical gap between peak electricity demand and available generation.

By contrast, the rest of the country continues to operate with healthy supply cushions. The Luzon Grid expects a peak demand of over 11,500 megawatts, which is comfortably supported by more than 15,500 megawatts in available capacity. Meanwhile, Mindanao’s afternoon peak demand is projected to top 2,600 megawatts, well within its available supply of over 3,000 megawatts.

The DOE assured the public that it is actively coordinating with power industry stakeholders and generation plant operators to restore offline capacity, stabilize the grid and ensure electricity reliability across the Visayas.
