What We Know So Far About Hogwarts Legacy 2

Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development, ending years of speculation about the future of one of its biggest gaming franchises.

The confirmation appeared in the company’s August 2026 shareholder update, which said its gaming pipeline includes “the second installment of Hogawarts Legacy.” Beyond that statement, Warner Bros. has not announced a release date, platforms, gameplay details or an official title.

The sequel follows the huge commercial success of the original Hogwarts Legacy, developed by Avalanche Software and released in February 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC before expanding to older consoles and Nintendo platforms.

The game sold 12 million copies within its first two weeks and surpassed $1 billion in revenue shortly after launch. By the end of 2023, sales had topped 22 million copies worldwide. The figure rose to 30 million by November 2024 and more than 40 million by December 2025, according to figures cited in the original report.

Avalanche Software remains associated with development of the next game, while Warner Bros. executives have previously identified Hogwarts Legacy as an important part of the company’s gaming strategy.

No trailer or gameplay footage has been released, and Warner Bros. has not confirmed which platforms will receive the sequel. Videos circulating online and presented as official trailers should therefore be treated with caution.

A 2027 to 2028 release window has been widely discussed based on Warner Bros. executive comments, development timelines and the company’s broader franchise plans. However, no launch window has been officially announced.

Reports have also suggested that the sequel is being developed with some coordination alongside HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series. Warner Bros. has not disclosed how closely the stories, settings or characters of the two projects could be connected.

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC are considered likely platforms, while a Nintendo Switch 2 version is also possible. None has been formally confirmed.

Job listings from Avalanche have also pointed to experience with Unreal Engine 5 and work on a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG, but those details should not yet be treated as confirmed features of the sequel.

The first Hogwarts Legacy was praised for allowing players to explore Hogwarts and the wider wizarding world, but it also faced criticism over repetitive side activities and a lack of meaningful consequences for player choices.

Among the frequently discussed improvements for a sequel are deeper role-playing systems, more reactive characters and stronger consequences for actions, including the use of Unforgivable Curses.

For now, one thing is certain: Hogwarts Legacy is becoming a full-fledged game franchise.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that the second installment is on the way. The bigger questions, including when players will see it and how much the wizarding world will change, remain unanswered.
