Jollibee Pushes New Spicy-Flavorful Campaign With Alexa Ilacad

Fried chicken and heat have always had an easy relationship, from Nashville hot chicken’s brick-red crust to chili-laced fried chicken found across Asia. The latest push for Spicy Chickenjoy enters that familiar territory with a straightforward idea: spice does not have to be a challenge to survive. It can simply make food taste better.

Spicy Chickenjoy itself is not new. It takes the familiar crispy, juicy fried chicken and adds a chili marinade and seasoned coating. What has changed is the way it is being presented. Jollibee Philippines vice president for marketing Dorothy Ching said the campaign draws a distinction between merely tolerating heat and enjoying what it adds to each bite. The message is aimed at making spicy food feel flavorful and approachable rather than simply intense.

The campaign also points to research cited by the company showing that about 13 percent of adult Filipinos, or roughly one in eight, consider spicy a taste preference. That is a significant group, though still a minority. Much of Filipino cooking traditionally favors sour, salty and sweet flavors, while intense heat tends to be more regional or dish-specific. The figure suggests there is room to appeal to diners who enjoy some heat without necessarily identifying as serious chili enthusiasts.

Actress, singer and television host Alexa Ilacad fronts the campaign. A familiar face to Filipino audiences since childhood, she has appeared in programs including Goin’ Bulilit, Luv U, The Killer Bride and Pinoy Big Brother. Her role gives the campaign a recognizable personality, though the more meaningful measure will be whether the renewed attention translates into more diners choosing the spicy version over the original.

The larger question is whether presenting spice as flavor rather than a test can change ordering habits. Restaurants regularly find new ways to draw attention to existing menu items, and Spicy Chickenjoy has already been available for years. The real test will be whether more diners begin treating the spicy version as a regular choice rather than an occasional alternative.
