Alex Eala Brings Filipiniana to Madrid’s Laureus Spotlight

At the Laureus World Sports Awards, one of sport’s most high-profile gatherings, Alex Eala stood out for more than her rising career.

Before returning to competition at the Madrid Open, the 20-year-old Filipina tennis player walked the red carpet in a modern Filipiniana designed by Rhett Eala.

The look, a beige gown paired with a piña bolero, introduced a distinctly Filipino material and silhouette into a space more often shaped by European luxury fashion.

The Filiprima’s presence in that room was already notable. At 20, she has entered the WTA Top 30, a first for any Filipino tennis player, and continues to build a career shaped across international training and competition.

The Laureus World Sports Awards is a curated space where athletic achievement is translated into image, where the world’s most recognised competitors appear not only as athletes but as global figures. The guest list reads like a document of the era’s defining sporting careers.

In this context, wearing piña on an international red carpet changes how it is seen. It is no longer just a traditional or ceremonial fabric—it becomes something modern, wearable, and part of global fashion.

Eala is set to begin her Madrid Open campaign against a qualifier, as she looks to sustain her growing momentum on the WTA Tour’s clay-court swing.
