The Philippine National Police will deploy around 6,000 personnel around the Senate building on Monday as the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte begins.
PNP spokesman Col. Allen Rae Co said the deployment will be limited to areas outside the Senate premises unless authorities receive a specific request for police presence inside the compound.
“Initially, the PNP will be deploying around 6,000 personnel around the Senate, and we have not yet received any special request to deploy personnel inside the Senate premises,” said Co during a press briefing at Camp Crame on Friday.
Co said the PNP has yet to receive information on whether any group has applied for a rally permit, but police are preparing for the possibility that groups may hold demonstrations outside the Senate during the proceedings.
He said the PNP has crafted a “comprehensive security plan” to maintain peace and order while the impeachment trial is underway.
“We would like to reassure the public that the PNP will be doing everything it can so that the impeachment process, the impeachment trial will be held in an environment that is safe, peaceful, and orderly,” said Co.
“Our comprehensive security plan is already in place. Intelligence monitoring are ongoing to monitor any threat that (may arise),” Co also said.
