Charlie Puth is finally coming back to the Philippines, and this time, the return feels more personal than a standard concert stop.
The American singer-songwriter is set to bring his Whatever’s Clever! World Tour to the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay on October 14, according to Live Nation Philippines. The Manila show marks his first major Philippine concert since his Nine Track Mind stop at the then-Kia Theatre in 2016, after a planned 2018 Voicenotes concert in Manila was canceled.
For Filipino fans who waited years to hear “Attention,” “One Call Away,” “See You Again,” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore” live again, Puth knows the gap has been long.
“I’m surprised no one’s mad at me. I mean, it’s been a long time. I feel like people are going to get mad at me,” Puth said in an interview with ABS-CBN News entertainment reporter MJ Felipe.
But Puth said the long wait was never about forgetting Manila. He said he wanted to make sure his comeback show would be different, polished, and worth the patience of fans who have followed him since his early years.
“I was just working. I was making sure we could put together the best show we could possibly put on. I never want any show I do to be the same,” he said.
That promise matters because Puth’s history with the Philippines is tied not only to his concerts, but also to one of the biggest songs of his career.
Puth recalled that his first visit to the Philippines in 2015 left a strong impression on him, describing the country as a beautiful and different place from anywhere he had been. He also praised Filipinos for their friendliness and their instinctive love for music.
“My first time in the Philippines was in 2015, and I remember it was just such a beautiful and different place than wherever I’d ever been before. And the people are so friendly, and everybody knows how to sing for some reason,” he said.
That line alone is likely to resonate with Filipino fans, who have long turned international concerts into massive sing-alongs. For Puth, Manila was not just another crowd. It was a place where the audience understood melody, lyrics, and emotion.
His fondest memory of the Philippines also carries a creative backstory: it was in a Manila hotel room where he produced the beat for “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” the hit single he later recorded with Selena Gomez. Puth said he had begun working on the guitar line during a trip to Japan before completing part of the production in the Philippines.
“Making ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ in the hotel room was a pretty great memory. Whatever hotel we were staying at, I just remember being immersed in the culture for the first time,” he shared.
That makes the October show feel like a return to the origin point of a song that many Filipino fans helped turn into a staple heartbreak anthem. “We Don’t Talk Anymore” later became one of Puth’s most recognizable hits and was certified by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2022.
The upcoming Manila concert also comes as Puth enters a more mature chapter as an artist. His Whatever’s Clever! era presents him not just as a pop hitmaker, but as a musician who wants fans to hear more of the craft behind the songs. His “Professor Puth” persona, which breaks down music theory and production online, has become part of his appeal, especially for young musicians and aspiring producers.
Puth, a Berklee College of Music graduate in music production and engineering, said he wants fans to enjoy the concert but also feel inspired by the musicianship on stage.
“There’s some great artistry that comes out of the Philippines and some great music that comes out of where you are as well,” he said. “So, if there’s someone who’s a bit discouraged because the music industry can be kind of tough sometimes, maybe they can be inspired by the wonderful musicianship on stage.”
For the Manila crowd, Puth is promising a show built on both nostalgia and reinvention. Fans can expect the familiar hits that made him a streaming and radio favorite, but he said the new tour will also introduce a more honest and specific version of himself.
“To all my loyal, OG Filipino fans, I hope you come to our show. It will be filled with nostalgia, and you’ll also be introduced to me in a new way, like you were when I first came to you in 2015,” Puth said.
