PH Navy, Partner Navies Conduct Live-Fire Air Defense Drill Ahead of RIMPAC 2026

The Philippine Navy, together with partner navies participating in a multinational group sail, successfully conducted a live-fire air defense exercise on June 18, 2026, as part of preparations for the upcoming Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026.

The activity was designed to enhance interoperability and strengthen collective readiness among participating maritime forces through coordinated air defense operations at sea.

Taking part in the exercise were the Philippine Navy vessel BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG6), the Republic of Singapore Navy Frigate RSS Steadfast (RSS 70), the Italian Navy Multi-purpose Surface Combatant ITS Giovanni delle Bande Nere (P 434), and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Destroyer JS Kongo (DDG-173).

During the drill, participating ships tested their respective air defense systems and engaged a simulated aerial threat, with an unmanned aerial vehicle target launched from JS Kongo acting as a low-flying hostile aircraft.

Officials said the exercise allowed participating navies to refine tactics, techniques, and procedures while improving coordination and integration among partner forces operating in a multinational environment.

The Philippine Navy’s participation in RIMPAC 2026 underscores its increasing capability to operate modern naval platforms and contribute effectively to multinational maritime operations.
