Senate Moves to Strengthen Student-Athlete Safety After Ateneo Deaths

Following the deaths of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes during a team activity, Senator JV Ejercito has filed a bill to strengthen the safety, welfare, and legal protections of student-athletes

Senate Bill No. 2269, or the “Student-Athletes Comprehensive Protection Act of 2026,” seeks to amend the existing Student-Athletes Protection Act (RA 10676) to codify safeguards for student-athletes during training, practices, and other school-sanctioned activities.

“Currently, there is no explicit legal provision ensuring the protection of student-athletes during school-sanctioned activities. Relying solely on good intentions is not enough,” Ejercito said.

The measure requires schools and athletic associations to provide a safe environment, qualified supervision, emergency response protocols, medical assessments, and access to health professionals to monitor athletes’ physical and nutritional needs. It also mandates policies against hazing, abuse, harassment, and retaliation.

Student-athletes who sustain injuries during sports activities may also receive free or subsidized medical coverage under the proposed law.

Ejercito extended his condolences to the families of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into the incident. “Our prayers are with the families. This bill aims to prevent tragedies like this in the future,” he said.
