Private Prosecutors Assert Independence in VP Duterte Impeachment Case

Lawyers assisting the House in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte emphasized their independence, rejecting claims that they are acting on behalf of Malacañang, the Senate, or any political office.

Veteran litigator Lorna Patajo-Kapunan clarified that the private prosecutors exercise professional judgment and do not receive instructions from any political entity. She also corrected a previous typographical error, noting she has never worked for the Palace.

Marforth Fua, managing partner of PECABAR Law, acknowledged the firm’s historical association with the Marcos family but stressed that the invitation to participate in the impeachment proceedings came solely from the House prosecution panel. “This is just any other regular case handled by the firm,” Fua said, emphasizing the professional nature of their engagement.

Amando Virgil Ligutan of SALiGAL Law, on the other hand, defended the competence and independence of the private prosecutors, saying past political affiliations have no bearing on the case. “They are independent, credible, professional, and highly competent,” Ligutan said.

Lead House prosecutor and Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro underscored that the selection of private prosecutors was an exclusive decision of the House panel, further reinforcing their autonomy in the proceedings.

The first batch of private prosecutors assisting the House includes lawyers from PECABAR Law, Kapunan and Castillo Law Offices, and SALiGAL Law, tasked with supporting the impeachment trial before the Senate.
