Marcos Calls for Truth, Unity as PH Marks 128th Independence Day

On the 128th anniversary of Philippine independence, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on citizens to protect truth, restore trust, and strengthen unity amid a time marked by political division and societal challenges.

The President, joined by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and their sons, led simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at Rizal Park in Manila. In his message, he emphasized that freedom is not only a legacy but a responsibility, urging Filipinos to respond to contemporary challenges with discernment, civic engagement, and solidarity.

“While our forebears fought colonial oppression through revolution, reform, and intellectual resistance, we face challenges of a different kind today. We must protect truth from distortion, harness technology wisely, and restore trust in a time increasingly marked by division and distrust,” Marcos said.

Marking the declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898, Marcos highlighted the enduring Filipino spirit, noting that despite wars, crises, and uncertainty, the nation’s resolve to build institutions and sustain unity prevailed. He paid tribute to heroes who secured liberty and to citizens devoted to advancing the common good, urging renewed commitment to active citizenship, good governance, and the pursuit of a “Bagong Pilipinas.”

Across the country, Independence Day ceremonies were also held at historical sites including the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, the Andres Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City, Barasoain Church in Malolos, the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan, Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas in Angeles City, and the Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion in Manila. Local government units, embassies, and consulates were encouraged to organize activities in commemoration of the day.

The observances included wreath-laying, flag-raising, and other commemorative activities honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for sovereignty while inspiring Filipinos to continue shaping the nation’s future. Later in the day, the President and First Lady hosted the Vin d’Honneur  at Malacañang as part of the celebrations.
