The Philippine government expects the planned multi-billion-peso expansion of Toshiba Corporation’s production capacity to generate approximately 3,000 local jobs and solidify the nation’s role in the global technology supply chain.
Investment czar and Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go met with top Toshiba officials, led by Chief Operating Officer and Senior Executive Vice President Koji Ikeya, to discuss the company’s strategic expansion to boost nearline hard disk drive (NL-HDD) manufacturing capacity in the country.
NL-HDDs serve as critical high-capacity storage components for data centers, which face rapidly surging demand driven by the global expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital services, and data-intensive technologies.
The new capital injection builds on Toshiba’s more than 30 years of manufacturing presence in the country, which functions as a key production hub for its global HDD portfolio. The move offers the Philippines a prime opening to capture a bigger market share in high-capacity data storage while sharpening its capabilities in advanced electronics assembly.
“We see Toshiba’s planned expansion as an opportunity to strengthen our industrial base, build an electronics and tech industry ecosystem that creates quality jobs for Filipinos, and position the Philippines to capture opportunities in the growing global technology and data economy. Toshiba’s continued commitment to the Philippines is a testament to the success of reforms such as CREATE MORE in attracting long-term investments,” Go said.
Officials from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) joined Go in reassuring Toshiba of the government’s full support in streamlining the investment process and fostering a stable manufacturing climate.
“The Philippines has been an important part of Toshiba’s manufacturing operations for more than three decades. We remain committed to growing our presence here, building on the skills and dedication of our Filipino employees, and working with the Philippine government to advance our next phase of investment,” Ikeya said.
Toshiba marks 31 years in the Philippines since establishing Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc. (TIP) at Laguna Technopark in 1995 before launching operations in 1996. The company currently runs two main manufacturing sites in Laguna, with its second location operating out of Carmelray Industrial Park 1 in Calamba.
Its local operations encompass the assembly and production of hard disk drives, enterprise solid-state drives, advanced helium-filled HDDs, engineering and design services, rework and printed circuit board assembly.
