President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed confidence that the Senate will return to its normal legislative functions and refocus on priority measures under the leadership of newly elected Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian.
Speaking during a Kapihan with the media interview in Kazan, Russia before returning to Manila, Marcos said he expects the Senate to study, deliberate, and pass the administration’s priority bills without delay.
He also reiterated that he will support whoever the Senate chooses as its leaders, provided that the selection process is “proper, is legal, is constitutional.”
Gatchalian was elected Senate President during a special session held on Wednesday, which Marcos had called amid delays in legislative work following the suspension of sessions and recent leadership issues in the chamber.
The President noted that the Senate’s earlier delays had affected the passage of priority legislation and had stalled the appointments of government officials and promotions within the military services.
