Probe Launched into Data Leak of Ombudsman Investigators

A joint investigation has been launched into the unauthorized online release of sensitive personal information belonging to government investigators, raising concerns over security risks and possible intimidation.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), in coordination with the Office of the Ombudsman, is working to identify those behind the leak, which exposed the identities of field investigators involved in ongoing cases.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has directed the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to lead the probe and coordinate closely with the Ombudsman to trace the source of the breach and determine how the information was accessed and circulated.

Nartatez said the case is being treated with urgency, noting that the incident directly impacts the safety of personnel engaged in critical investigations. He emphasized that protecting investigators is a priority, given the risks associated with intelligence and case-building operations.

The probe follows a statement from the Office of the Ombudsman condemning the disclosure, which it described as a possible attempt to intimidate its personnel and undermine their security. The agency warned that such actions pose a direct threat to public servants performing their duties.

Authorities said the investigation will cover both external actors and possible internal involvement, as part of efforts to fully determine how the data breach occurred.

Officials added that those found responsible may face charges under the Data Privacy Act and the Anti-Cybercrime Prevention Act once sufficient evidence is established.

Nartatez reiterated that accountability will be pursued, affirming the PNP’s commitment to protecting government personnel from threats related to their work.

He also assured that the police force remains ready to extend protection to public officials and employees who may be at risk due to similar incidents, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity and safety of government investigations.
