Powering The Digital Future: Doe Shares Strategy To Fuel Nation’s AI Infrastructure Ambitions

The Department of Energy (DOE) has signaled that a resilient, secure power grid is the non-negotiable bedrock of the Philippines’ digital transformation, as the nation lays the groundwork for massive artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

The DOE expressed its formal backing for the newly unveiled Philippine AI+ Infrastructure Masterplan (PAIIM) 2026–2033, a strategic national framework designed to expand data centers, high-performance computing hubs and digital networks across the country over the next seven years.

Undersecretary Maria Francesca Del Rosario highlighted that sustaining the heavy power demands of advanced computing requires a robust and forward-looking energy grid.

“For the Philippines to succeed in AI, we must first be secure in our energy supply,” Del Rosario stated, adding that reliable power must be supplied to new high-tech clusters without jeopardizing the everyday electricity needs of Filipino households.

To support the energy surge driven by AI facilities, the Masterplan outlines a diversified energy matrix. By 2033, target plans dictate that renewable energy sources must power at least 40% of the electricity demand from dedicated AI hubs. Natural gas will provide crucial transition support, while nuclear energy is being evaluated as a long-term baseload option.

Energy officials noted that executing the Masterplan will require tight collaboration between public agencies and private sector developers to build energy systems that can sustainably absorb data center expansion.

By aligning digital infrastructure planning with energy generation targets, the DOE aims to ensure that as the Philippines climbs the global AI value chain, its grid remains steady, sustainable and reliable.
