The Philippine National Police (PNP) has instructed its investigative and intelligence divisions to track domestic connections linked to a massive drug shipment intercepted in Laos, following intelligence reports indicating that a local politician funded the charter flight.
PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. stated that the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and the PNP Drug Enforcement Group are collaborating with counterpart government agencies to evaluate data that could pinpoint all individuals and networks tied to the smuggling operation.
The operational directive follows instructions from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr., issued under the guidance of DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to step up anti-illegal drug efforts and align inter-agency intelligence.
“We are validating all available information and coordinating closely with other agencies to establish any possible links to drug trafficking networks in the country. We will pursue every credible lead and ensure that any action we take is firmly supported by evidence,” PGEN Nartatez said.
The primary objective of the case build-up is to prepare formal criminal charges against every individual connected to the aborted smuggling operation.
“That’s a lot of illegal drugs and just imagine if their illegal activity succeeded. How many Filipinos, especially from the youth, will be affected by this? We will not let this pass, and we will hold them accountable,” PGEN Nartatez also said.
The investigation was initiated after reports surfaced that a politician based in the southern portion of the country allegedly financed the chartered aircraft utilized to move the contraband seized in Laos.
Law enforcement authorities intercepted 521 kilograms of suspected shabu valued at approximately P3.54 billion on Oct. 1 at Luang Prabang International Airport in Laos. Officials reported that the contraband was scheduled for transport to the Philippines on a private jet, leading to the arrest of several individuals, including a Filipino national.
In a related interdiction in Thailand, maritime authorities seized 1,178 kilograms of suspected shabu valued at around P8.01 billion from a fishing vessel on Oct. 7 that was similarly headed for the Philippines, resulting in the arrest of six Thai crew members.
PGEN Nartatez stated that the PNP will maintain continuous information sharing with partner agencies to cross-examine suspect backgrounds, verify potential connections to domestic distribution syndicates, and determine whether local facilitators aided the operation.
