PLDT, Smart Expand Satellite-to-Phone Tests to Batangas

PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. have expanded testing of their Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite connectivity to Batangas in partnership with Lynk Global, aiming to bolster national disaster response and network resiliency.

The move follows successful pilot activities conducted earlier this year in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte. The latest trials, spearheaded by Smart’s Network Strategy and Architecture Team alongside Lynk, simulated disaster scenarios where traditional terrestrial network infrastructure was temporarily unavailable.

“Reliable communication is essential in times of crisis,” said PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head Menardo G. Jimenez Jr. “For us, this goes beyond technology. Our mission at PLDT is to be there for all Filipinos, whether they are talking to family abroad, or requesting for assistance from a rooftop in the middle of a calamity.”

D2D technology enables standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites without requiring specialized satellite equipment. While primary testing focuses on providing critical emergency links during typhoons and prolonged power outages, Smart and Lynk are expanding tests to include two-way SMS communications to keep users connected when local cell towers go offline.

Beyond disaster mitigation, PLDT highlights the technology’s potential to bridge connectivity gaps in remote, underserved regions, as well as provide crucial communications support for maritime workers, fishermen and off-grid travelers.
