Philippines Pitches Infrastructure Pipeline to Australia to Boost Transit Modernization

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is inviting the Australian government and private sector investors to back key transport infrastructure initiatives aimed at overhauling the Philippines’ mobility network.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez met with Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Marc Innes-Brown to explore direct investments and strategic cooperation across the country’s transit landscape.

“This is the kind of partnership that would help close the gaps in the transport sector. President Marcos Jr. has said sustained partnership with other countries will help improve the daily commute of our countrymen,” Lopez stated.

During the meeting, transport officials highlighted flagship rail initiatives, including the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP), the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) System, MRT-7, the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project, MRT-3 upgrades and the Philippine Automated Fare Collection System (PAFCS).

The DOTr also presented investment packages for regional airport upgrades, identifying sites such as Laguindingan, Bohol-Panglao, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Laoag, Busuanga, Bacolod-Silay, Tacloban, General Santos and Siargao.

On road transport, Lopez outlined plans for the EDSA Busway, the Taguig City Integrated Terminal Exchange (TCITX), non-motorized active transport programs, and the Navotas Feeder Line Project intended to connect to the EDSA Busway. Additionally, nationwide seaport enhancements were pitched to strengthen inter-island connectivity and streamline maritime logistics.

Ambassador Innes-Brown voiced strong interest in the proposals, noting the alignment between Australian technical capability and Philippine development goals.

“The Philippines has ambitious plans for infrastructure, energy and economic development. We want to see more Australian investors bringing capital and expertise to help turn those ambitions into reality,” Innes-Brown said.
