The Manila City government will implement measures to prevent heat-related illnesses as the heat index continues to rise.
In a post on the Manila Public Information Office (PIO) Facebook page, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso directed the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD) to conduct misting operations in various communities to help cool streets. The Department of Environmental and Public Services (DEPS) will assist in the effort.
“Palamigin ninyo ang mga kalsada. Ipagmalasakit natin ang mga komunidad, makatikim man lang sila ng konting lamig at mabawasan ang matinding init. Use all our equipment available to cool down the city geographically,” Domagoso said.
The mayor also instructed health centers to ensure an adequate supply of medicines and ordered the Manila Health Department (MHD) to gather data and develop a long-term plan to address heat-related risks.
Meanwhile, the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) and the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) will coordinate to adjust the schedule of social pension distribution from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to help protect senior citizens from extreme heat.
Domagoso also directed the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) to provide drinking water to traffic enforcers while on duty.
