Manila, Taiwan Economic and Functional Ties Maintained Under One China Framework, Says DFA

The Philippines remains committed to its long-standing foreign policy while actively maintaining non-political ties with Taiwan, according to a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) statement issued Sunday.

The diplomatic agency reiterated that Manila recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, emphasizing that the country’s official posture remains “consistent, clear and unchanged.” However, diplomatic officials clarified that these official relations do not restrict non-governmental interaction with neighboring regions.

“The One China Policy does not preclude the Philippines from pursuing economic, cultural and functional cooperation with Taiwan,” the agency said.

Echoing previous remarks from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the DFA highlighted the deep-rooted commercial and historical ties connecting the two populations, noting that the Philippines and Taiwan are “close neighbors with a long history of doing business together.”

To safeguard regional interests, the department affirmed that it would continue to conduct diplomacy, maintain communication and pursue the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law to advance the national interest and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

The administration’s stance reflects an ongoing effort to manage complex regional dynamics. During an August interview, President Marcos reaffirmed adherence to the policy while pointing out that bilateral trade and functional engagement continue seamlessly through dedicated channels. He specifically identified the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) as the representative offices overseeing these operational relations.

Amid heightened geopolitical friction in the region, the chief executive has consistently advocated for diplomatic restraint. In a May statement, he stressed the need to avoid confrontation and hostilities and said conflicts should be resolved peacefully.

The DFA’s recent clarification underscores the Philippines’ strategic approach to diplomatic affairs, balancing formal state relations with Beijing while sustaining essential trade, cultural and socio-economic exchanges with Taipei.
