The Philippines has taken a significant leap toward expanding its clean energy footprint following the official energization of the first phase of the Tantangan Solar Power Project in South Cotabato.
With a total planned capacity of 99 megawatt-peak (MWp), the facility stands as the largest ground-mounted solar power development in Mindanao. The milestone marks the activation of Phase 1, which delivers an initial generating capacity of 74.5 MWp, a critical step as the plant advances toward full commercial operations.
Hailed as a proudly Filipino industrial achievement, the project underscores local industry capability to adopt cutting-edge green technologies while driving sustainable regional development.
The achievement directly supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s target of accelerating the nation’s renewable energy transition, enhancing national energy security, and attracting high-value investments to the clean energy sector.
Once fully completed, the Tantangan facility is projected to generate approximately 163 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. This capacity is estimated to power roughly 68,000 households across Mindanao while offsetting nearly 114,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
By delivering grid-ready, reliable power to the southern island, the development reinforces the Philippines’ position in clean energy innovation, helping build a more resilient energy matrix while securing long-term economic and environmental benefits for local communities.
