The Department of Education (DepEd) has expressed deep grief over the tragic deaths of two elementary students during a school-hosted fun run at Cauayan South Central School in Isabela on Saturday morning, October 3, 2026.
The incident occurred within the school grounds during a “Color and Bubble Fun Run” activity organized with the School Parent-Teacher Association (SPTA). Initial police reports indicate that four young pupils were playing near a foam machine producing thick bubbles when they suffered electric shocks around 6:20 a.m. Two students, aged 7 and 8, died at the scene, while two others were rushed to local hospitals for medical treatment and observation.
In a formal statement, DepEd offered its condolences to the victims’ families and confirmed that a multi-agency fact-finding investigation is underway.
“The Department of Education expresses its deepest sympathies to the families and school community mourning the tragic loss of two learners at Cauayan South Central School in Isabela,” DepEd said. “DepEd is taking the necessary steps to establish the facts surrounding the incident and is coordinating with the local government and law enforcement authorities. A fact-finding investigation is underway, including a review of the activity, safety measures, equipment used, and the roles of those involved.”
The agency emphasized that “appropriate action will be taken based on the findings” once the investigation concludes.
The Cauayan City Schools Division Office confirmed that the tragedy occurred on campus during scheduled weekend activities and stated that division officials are coordinating closely with the local government and disaster response units to provide immediate assistance to the grieving families.
Administration and SPTA officers at Cauayan South Central School released a joint statement expressing profound sorrow over the tragedy.
“The entire family of Cauayan South Central School, together with the School Parent-Teacher Association Officers, expresses its profound sadness over the tragic loss following an unforeseen incident within the school premises. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, and the entire school community during this difficult time,” the school administration stated.
School officials reaffirmed their commitment to learner safety while appealing for sensitivity.
“The school remains committed to the safety, welfare, and well-being of every learner. We recognize the importance of providing a caring, understanding, and supportive environment where learners feel valued, heard, and protected,” the school added.
Both DepEd and local school officials strongly urged the public and social media users to respect the privacy of the grieving families by refraining from circulating unverified claims, photos, videos, or personal details of the minors. Local police and forensic investigators are continuing their technical review of the electrical equipment and setup to determine criminal and administrative liability.
