A gesture of compassion by a police officer in Catanduanes has drawn public praise after he carried a senior citizen stroke survivor to ensure the elderly resident could safely return home following the release of government cash assistance.
Police Corporal Harold Kim Faner of the San Andres Municipal Police Station stepped in after noticing the difficulty faced by the elderly beneficiary while leaving the payout area.
Authorities said the senior citizen’s residence was located roughly five kilometers away, and due to the individual’s medical condition following a stroke, walking home was no longer feasible.
Without hesitation, Faner carried and brought the elderly resident all the way home, ensuring safe passage after the assistance distribution.
The act quickly circulated on social media and was widely shared by netizens, who praised the officer for going beyond routine duty and demonstrating compassion in public service.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the incident reflects the deeper meaning of law enforcement service, which extends beyond maintaining order to providing direct assistance to vulnerable members of the community.
“Ang tunay na serbisyo ng pulis ay nasusukat hindi lamang sa pagpapatupad ng batas, kundi sa mga sandaling tayo ay nagiging katuwang ng mamamayan sa kanilang pinakamaselang pangangailangan,” Nartatez said.
He added that such acts of service are consistent with ongoing reforms within the Philippine National Police aimed at strengthening community engagement and responsiveness.
The PNP said the gesture aligns with its “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman” program, which emphasizes visible, compassionate, and community-centered policing.
