The Philippine Navy showcased its gunnery capabilities as BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG6) joined 14 allied warships in the Naval Surface Fire Support Rodeo, a live-fire competition under the Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2026.
The competition was held on July 14 off the coast of Hawaii.
As the fourth ship on the firing line, BRP Miguel Malvar tested the performance and accuracy of its Oto Melara 76mm Super Rapid Multi-Feeding Main Gun during the practice run and record firing.
The frigate accurately landed shells on a virtual two-dimensional land target located more than 3.5 miles away.
The Pacific Missile Range Facility will later release the official performance reports. Ships with the smallest average distance from the target using five salvos will be declared winners.
Top performers will receive trophies during the RIMPAC closing ceremony on July 31, 2026.
Aside from the competition, the exercise focused on standard procedures for targeting, range safety and communications between a spotter and a firing ship in accordance with a joint fire plan.
Naval Surface Fire Support is a critical component of amphibious operations, allowing naval forces to suppress enemy coastal defenses, destroy fortified positions and protect amphibious landing forces.
The Philippine Navy said it continues to enhance its tactical proficiency and operational readiness as part of efforts to maintain a modern and capable naval force.
