The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has intercepted approximately P235 million worth of undeclared cigarettes during an inspection at Batangas Port, officials confirmed.
Customs authorities said the shipment was flagged during routine cargo examinations conducted as part of the agency’s anti-smuggling operations.
Initial reports indicated that the cigarettes were not properly declared in the shipment documents, prompting further inspection by customs personnel.
BOC officials said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen border control and prevent illegal goods from entering the country.
“The BOC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intelligence monitoring and coordination with partner agencies to prevent the entry of smuggled goods and uphold lawful trade across the country’s borders.,” the agency said in previous statements regarding anti-smuggling efforts.
Authorities noted that cigarette smuggling remains a significant concern because it deprives the government of tax revenue.
Officials said they are continuing their investigation to determine the individuals or groups responsible for the shipment.
Customs authorities also emphasized the importance of stronger coordination among agencies involved in border enforcement.
The seized items will undergo proper legal procedures as the investigation progresses.
The BOC reiterated its commitment to intensifying inspections at major ports to deter smuggling activities.
