A rare Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Mini was successfully auctioned for ₱2,569,600, inclusive of buyer’s premium, during Salcedo Auctions’ Finer Pursuits: Important Philippine Art & Rare Collectibles sale held at NEX Tower in Makati on June 6.
The final price significantly outpaced its pre-sale estimate of ₱980,000 to ₱1,200,000, reflecting strong bidding interest and continued appetite among collectors for rare luxury timepieces in the Philippine market.
The watch is a Royal Oak Mini with a 20mm case, a discontinued ladies’ model created by designer Emmanuel Gueit and first released in 1997, a period when Audemars Piguet experimented with smaller and unconventional interpretations of its flagship Royal Oak line.
Its design traces back to the iconic Royal Oak introduced in 1972 by Gérald Genta, widely regarded as the foundation of the modern luxury sports watch category, defined by its octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet design.
Although compact in size, the piece carries hallmark Royal Oak features, including a patterned Tapisserie dial, an 18-carat yellow gold case and bracelet, and a quartz Calibre 2601 movement, positioning it as both a decorative luxury object and a functional wristwatch.
What sets the auctioned piece apart is its complete set condition, which includes the original presentation box, travel case, Certificate d’Origine et de Garantie, instruction manual, and case tool. In the vintage watch market, such completeness is highly valued and often contributes significantly to resale strength.
The Royal Oak Mini was introduced during a broader creative phase for Audemars Piguet in the 1990s, when the brand simultaneously explored extremes in design scale, including highly complex large-format models like the Royal Oak Grande Complication.
While the Mini is no longer in production, its design influence continues to appear in newer, smaller Royal Oak interpretations, including modern 23mm variants released in precious metals, reflecting ongoing demand for compact luxury watches.
The auction result highlights a wider trend in the secondary luxury watch market, where discontinued Audemars Piguet Royal Oak references, especially gold variants and rare configurations, are consistently achieving strong prices due to limited supply, strong design heritage, and increasing collector demand for well-preserved complete sets.
