April Declared Philippine Veterans’ Month

April of every year has been officially declared Philippine Veterans’ Month under a newly enacted law that institutionalizes a nationwide observance honoring the service, heroism, and sacrifices of Filipino veterans.

Republic Act No. 12320, or the Philippine Veterans’ Month Act, was signed into law on May 26, 2026.

The law establishes a month-long commemoration dedicated to recognizing the role of veterans in defending the country’s freedom, sovereignty, and democratic values.

Under the measure, government agencies, local government units, state universities and colleges, and other stakeholders are directed to organize commemorative and service-oriented activities throughout April.

These activities include educational programs, youth and volunteer engagement initiatives, recognition and awards ceremonies, public awareness campaigns, and programs aimed at improving the delivery of benefits and services to veterans and their families.

The law also provides for health, wellness, and support activities for veterans, while encouraging wider public understanding of their contributions to nation-building.

The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, in coordination with the Department of National Defense and other partner-agencies, will serve as one of the lead institutions in implementing and promoting programs for Philippine Veterans’ Month.

Supporters of the measure said the law is intended to ensure that the stories and sacrifices of Filipino veterans are preserved and passed on to younger generations.

The legislation also seeks to strengthen patriotism, civic consciousness, and historical awareness among Filipinos by making veterans’ remembrance a regular part of the national calendar.

Republic Act No. 12320 recognizes that honoring veterans should go beyond ceremonial tributes by promoting programs that directly support their welfare and deepen public appreciation of their service to the country.
