Alexandra Eala’s memorable Wimbledon campaign came to an end after the Filipina fell to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in a hard-fought fourth-round match at the All England Club.
Eala lost the opening set but refused to fade, responding with a strong win in the second set to push the match into a decider. Paolini, the world’s No. 13 player, however, regained control in the final set and held off Eala’s challenge to prevail, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals.
Despite the loss, Eala left Wimbledon with a campaign that further lifted Philippine tennis on the world stage. She showed resilience against one of Italy’s top players, matching Paolini through long exchanges and proving she could compete deep into the second week of a Grand Slam.
The defeat ended Eala’s run, but not the significance of what she accomplished. Her fourth-round finish at Wimbledon gave Filipino fans another reason to believe that her rise is still far from over.
