AFP Chief Urges Troops to Defend Freedom, Sovereignty

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. called on soldiers and civilian personnel to uphold the country’s hard-won freedom and remain steadfast in defending Philippine sovereignty as the nation marks its 128th Independence Day.

In a statement issued Thursday, Brawner paid tribute to Filipino heroes and said this year’s theme, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,” serves as a reminder that the country’s independence was secured through sacrifice and must be protected for future generations.

“It reminds us that the freedom we now enjoy was secured through the sacrifices of those who came before us, and that the future of our nation depends on how faithfully we uphold and protect that hard-earned independence,” Brawner said.

He said the military stands at the intersection of the nation’s history and future, with a duty to safeguard democratic institutions, protect the Filipino people, and preserve national sovereignty.

“We honor the courage of our heroes by remaining faithful to our sworn duty as defenders of our sovereignty, preserving democratic institutions, and safeguarding the welfare of the Filipino people,” he said.

Brawner also urged military personnel and civilian human resources to serve as examples of patriotism through discipline, integrity, and commitment to duty.

He said those in the defense establishment carry the responsibility of ensuring that the freedom won by earlier generations will be preserved for Filipinos yet to come.

“Let us become living examples of patriotism, reflected in our discipline and integrity, inspiring every Filipino through our actions that help shape the future of our beloved nation,” Brawner said.

As the country commemorates Independence Day, Brawner called on the armed forces to draw strength from history and stay committed to their mission.

“Let us continue to stand with one goal and wholeheartedly defend our beloved Philippines for a more prosperous future,” he said.
