The Armed Forces of the Philippines has formally taken over leadership of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), marking a new phase in regional security cooperation among Southeast Asian nations.
The turnover ceremony was held at Camp Aguinaldo, with AFP Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr. leading the event. The occasion was also attended by General Datuk Haji Malek Razak Bin Sulaiman, Chief of Defence Force of the Malaysian Armed Forces
During the ceremony, the symbolic leadership of the AOT was handed over from outgoing Malaysian head Brig. Gen. Dato’ Pahlawan Asri Bin Shukor to incoming Philippine head Maj. Gen. Oliver Maquiling. The transition signals continued collaboration among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in promoting peace and stability in the region.
In his remarks, Brawner highlighted the significance of the observer team in building trust among neighboring countries, noting that its impact lies in sustaining stability, encouraging restraint, and strengthening confidence between nations.
With the Philippines now at the helm of the AOT, the AFP said it remains committed to deepening defense ties and enhancing coordination with regional partners to support long-term peace and collective security efforts.
