The Philippine National Police (PNP) has heightened security preparations in Metro Manila and several key regions ahead of the formal opening of the Senate impeachment court proceedings tied to the case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units have been placed on alert in anticipation of protest actions and political gatherings expected to coincide with the Senate’s convening as an impeachment court today.
According to the PNP, additional police personnel have been deployed in strategic areas, including locations surrounding the Senate and other identified convergence points across the country, to maintain peace and order during the proceedings.
Nartatez said authorities are expecting supporters from opposing political camps to stage demonstrations as emotions surrounding the impeachment process continue to intensify.
“The goal is always to ensure that all activities will start and end peacefully. We expect high emotions from the supporters and this is the part when police presence is needed to maintain peace and order,” Nartatez said.
Police are closely monitoring possible protest activities in parts of Metro Manila and Davao City, where groups are expected to hold rallies related to the high-profile impeachment proceedings.
The Senate leadership earlier confirmed that the chamber would convene as an impeachment court in accordance with its rules and constitutional procedures.
The heightened security measures also come days after supporters of Senator Ronald Dela Rosa gathered outside the Senate amid reports linking the lawmaker to an alleged arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Despite the increased police presence, Nartatez assured the public that law enforcement personnel would respect the right to peaceful assembly while carrying out their mandate to protect public safety.
“We fully understand the sentiments of everybody on this matter but please don’t treat your PNP as your enemy. Our presence is purely for your safety and security,” he said.
“I assure our kababayan that the PNP is ready for any eventuality, and we remain focused on exercising our mandate to serve and protect the Filipino people. We appeal to those who are planning to hold rallies to conduct their activities in a peaceful and orderly manner to avoid issues,” he added.
