The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) said the ongoing firefighting operations at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill Facility (NSLF) is now focused on the remaining area at the northern side facing Obando, Bulacan.
At the council meeting at the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) headquarters in Pasig City, the Navotas City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that 79.6 percent of the fire at the landfill has been extinguished.
In addition, representatives from the Department of the Environment and National Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) reported improving air and water quality in Metro Manila
MMDRRMC Chairperson and MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes said the improving situation at the NSLF was made possible through the efforts of the council in coordination with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of National Defense, DENR, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Japan, through the Embassy of Japan, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and its disaster relief experts, as well as assistance from the United States, contributed to improving firefighting operations and coordination efforts on the ground.
