Philippine and Japanese ground forces conducted their first combined live-fire exercise in Tarlac, marking a key step in strengthening military coordination and combat readiness under Exercise Salaknib.

The Philippine Army’s Armor “Pambato” Division and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) carried out the two-day drill from May 1 to 2 at the lahar fields of Colonel Ernesto Rabina Air Base in Capas, Tarlac. The exercise involved more than 200 Filipino troops and around 40 Japanese personnel in a coordinated display of firepower and tactical execution.

Philippine Army troops from the 1st Tank Battalion deployed four Sabrah Light Tanks, while Japanese forces from the Recon Combat Battalion of the 12th Brigade fielded four Maneuver Combat Vehicles.

The activity included a subject matter expert exchange and a live-fire phase simulating combat scenarios requiring troops to locate, fix, and neutralize targets.

Beyond firepower, the drill emphasized precision and discipline, with participants rehearsing safety protocols and contingency responses to potential weapon malfunctions.

Senior military officials from both countries observed the exercise, including Philippine Army Vice Commander Maj. Gen. Efren Morados and JGSDF 12th Brigade Deputy Commander Col. Yoshifumi Ogura, along with representatives from allied forces.

Exercise Salaknib 2026 is part of the Philippine Army’s broader shift toward external defense operations, aimed at enhancing interoperability with Japan, the United States, and other partner militaries. The next phase of the exercise is set to continue through June, following the conclusion of the ongoing Balikatan drills.
