700 Ilocos Norte Fisherfolk Receive Income Aid Amid No-Sail Period

More than 700 fisherfolk in Ilocos Norte received financial assistance and food support from the Department of National Defense (DND), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the provincial government to help offset income losses during the ongoing no-sail period.

A total of 734 beneficiaries were provided aid equivalent to four days’ income, along with family food packs, during a dialogue with coastal communities held at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena. The beneficiaries included 366 from Paoay, 273 from Burgos, and 95 from Laoag City.

Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. emphasized that extending assistance to affected communities is part of the government’s responsibility, alongside ensuring that coordination with local governments and residents remains a priority during large-scale activities.

Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos welcomed the prompt delivery of aid, noting its importance for coastal communities whose livelihoods have been temporarily disrupted.

A no-sail zone remains in effect until May 6 as a safety precaution due to increased air, land, and maritime activity in the area.

Officials also highlighted that joint military training activities contribute to strengthening national defense and protecting the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone, while efforts are made to minimize their impact on local communities.
