Bolts Strike When It Matters: Meralco Crushes Ginebra to Seize Top 4 Momentum

When opportunity knocked, the Meralco Bolts didn’t just answer, they kicked the door down.

With the race for a coveted Top 4 spot tightening to a fever pitch, Meralco delivered an electrifying statement, dismantling crowd darlings Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 112–91, in a tenacious Labor Day showdown between two bitter rivals with a lot of history between them, in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The game turned from tense to lopsided in a blink, thanks to a blistering second-quarter avalanche. The Bolts erupted for a 29–13 surge, a devastating haymaker that left Ginebra reeling and the partisan crowd stunned into uneasy silence. From there, Meralco never looked back, controlling the tempo with poise, precision, and punishing defense.

More than a win, it was a calculated takeover.

Coach Luigi Trillo underscored the magnitude of the triumph after halting Ginebra’s five-game winning streak. “This was big,” he said, acknowledging the Gin Kings’ surge prior to the clash. “Now we’ve put ourselves in a stronger position to fight for that Top 4.”

That position is everything. In a league where playoff advantages can spell the difference between survival and elimination, Meralco’s rise to 6-3 and into fourth place could reshape the postseason landscape.

Leading the charge was Chris Newsome, who orchestrated the Bolts’ attack with calm authority. Named Player of the Game, he tallied 12 points, three assists, and three steals, steering a balanced offensive symphony that overwhelmed Ginebra’s defense.

Import Marvin Jones and rising gunner CJ Cansino fired 18 points apiece, while Cliff Hodge and Bong Quinto chipped in 11 each. Floor generals Jason Brickman and Chris Banchero added 10 apiece, ensuring the offense never sputtered.

On the other side, it was a tale of two stars, and not much else.

RJ Abarrientos and resident import Justin Brownlee did all they could, pouring in 24 points each. But the lack of support proved fatal, as no other Gin King reached double digits in a performance that exposed cracks beneath their winning streak.

From riding high at 7-2, Ginebra stumbled to 7-3, now chasing leaders NLEX Road Warriors and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, both sitting at 8-2.

For Meralco, the mission is clear, and it’s within reach. With winnable games ahead against Blackwater, Terrafirma, and Magnolia, the Bolts are suddenly in prime position to secure the twice-to-beat incentive.

“Top 4 is crucial,” Newsome emphasized. “If you want to win a championship, you take every advantage you can get.”

On this night, the Bolts didn’t just take advantage—they seized control, flipped the narrative, and sent a chilling message to the rest of the league: they’re charging at full power, and the timing couldn’t be more dangerous.
