Senator Christopher “Bong” Go renewed his call for equal incentives and stronger support for para-athletes as he led the recognition of Filipino medalists from the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand, where the Philippines won 134 medals.
Speaking at the incentives awarding ceremony at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, Go lauded the delegation’s performance, which included 45 gold, 37 silver, and 52 bronze medals.
“Sa pag-uwi ninyo na may 134 medals, pinatunayan ninyo na walang hadlang sa pusong determinado at handang lumaban para sa bayan,” Go said, calling the athletes an inspiration to Filipinos.
The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Sports, underscored the role of sports in nation-building and youth development, and called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector in supporting athletes.
He reiterated his push for Senate Bill No. 1743, which seeks to amend the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act to provide upgraded and equalized incentives for para-athletes. The measure has been approved on third reading in the Senate and is awaiting action in the House of Representatives.
“Pasado na po ito sa Senado, kaya nananawagan tayo sa Kongreso na maipasa na ito bilang batas,” Go said, stressing that para-athletes deserve equal recognition for bringing honor to the country.
He emphasized that disability should not be a basis for unequal treatment, noting that government incentives must reflect the dedication and sacrifices of athletes representing the Philippines.
“Hindi nila kasalanan na ipanganak na may kapansanan. Dapat pantay ang suporta ng gobyerno,” he added.
Go also cited recent developments in sports funding, including a Supreme Court ruling affirming the mandate for the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office to remit a portion of their earnings to support the Philippine Sports Commission.
He acknowledged sports officials, including the Philippine Paralympic Committee and PSC leaders, for their continued role in developing Philippine athletics.
Beyond incentives, Go highlighted ongoing initiatives such as grassroots sports development, improved training facilities, and expanded medical and financial assistance. He also promoted the National Academy of Sports, established under Republic Act No. 11470, which integrates academic and athletic training for student-athletes.
The senator has also filed a measure to expand the academy through regional campuses to widen access for young athletes.
Closing the event, Go urged para-athletes to continue inspiring others through their achievements.
“Keep proving that limitations can be overcome. Sa ating para-athletes—go lang nang go,” he said.
